The Challenges of Tornado Damage: A 100-Year-Old Farmhouse in Bennington
At Home Standards Inspection Services, we often see homes with unique stories to tell. Recently, Steve Vacha, Home Standards president and one of our ASHI certified inspectors, had the opportunity to assess a 100-year-old farmhouse in Bennington. This home bore the unmistakable marks of tornado damage—a reminder of how powerful and unforgiving Mother Nature can be.
The damage was extensive and went straight to the home’s core. The force of the tornado had literally shifted the house on its foundation. One of the most striking issues Steve found was a ¾-inch gap that had opened up along the foundation’s edge. Additionally, the top course of the concrete masonry unit (CMU) block foundation had shifted inward, causing it to lose its vital connection to the rest of the wall.
This kind of structural compromise is more than cosmetic—it’s a serious safety issue. Restoring the integrity of the foundation will require significant work to bring the wall back to its original stability. These types of repairs are essential to ensure the longevity and safety of the home.
For homeowners, this serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of regular inspections, especially after severe weather events. Tornadoes can wreak havoc on a property in ways that may not always be visible to the untrained eye. A professional inspection can uncover these hidden issues before they worsen, providing clarity and a path forward.
If you’ve experienced severe weather or simply want peace of mind about your home’s condition, schedule an inspection with Home Standards. We’re here to help ensure your home stands strong—no matter what nature throws its way.
